12/23/2022 Here Comes Santa Claus!

Moving on from Weatherford, Texas we made a couple of short stops at the Texarkana Elk’s Lodge and a return visit to the North Little Rock KOA. From there we shot up to the Bowling Green KOA then our Kentucky “home” at Three Creeks Campground in the town of Corinth. It’s been a freaky coincidence (or omen?) that we have been getting deluged with rain for a few days as we were on our way to view “the Ark”. I sure hope there is room for us, three down, thirty-seven to go…

The Ark Encounter is surely MASSIVE! For you secular heathens out there, The Ark Encounter is one of two very large attractions run by the organization Answers In Genesis, the other is the Creation Museum. The Ark is a life sized replica of Noah’s Ark as described in the Bible. It contains non-stop historical depictions/re-creations/stories of the biblical times leading up to and after the Great Flood. The whole “encounter” covers over 800 acres and besides “the boat”, it contains a zoo, zip-line stations, play areas for kids, petting zoo, virtual reality attraction, main auditorium for various presentations both live and video, and during this time of year they decorate for Christmas with massive quantities of lights, putting on a nighttime Christmas program. There are also the prerequisite food/snack stands, restaurant, and several gift shops for all your gnoshing/shopping pleasure. I’ll just leave it at that and let you gawk at the following photos, no captions…

With our Ark encounter completed, the rain morphed into snow on the day we raised jacks. I’m not real fond of the thought of driving in a snow storm, but we managed to drive out of the light flurries within the first hour. Our “Destination Alpha”? A return visit to the Grand Ole RV Resort on the north side of Nashville in the town of Goodlettsville. We originally planned a short stay and to get out before the forecasted “bomb cyclone” hit with it’s accompanying single digit & below zero high temperatures, but plan change #8,962 had us extend through Christmas Day and stick out those temperatures. 

We have made several visits to Nashville over the years and have seen many of the sights, including the Christmas decor at the Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center, Cheekwood’s Mansion, The Hermitage, and many others, so we gave all those a pass this time. We did manage to find ourselves down in Marathon Village, so we paid the area a visit. The old car manufacturing complex is now a series of shops which includes the store for the TV show “American Pickers”. It was antique heaven for those who are into old stuff. The hallways were full of antique tools & equipment, I’ll jump out on a limb here and venture an opinion that a lot of it was car manufacturing related. Other shops included boutiques, music related “stuff”, all manner of souvenir knick-knacks, and even a couple of distilleries on the block with swag sales and tastings. 

A foray down to Broadway was necessary to pay a visit to Famous Nashville, the highly touristy rooftop bar. We were thoroughly unimpressed immediately upon arrival, but the view from the roof was nice, looking down at the Cumberland River and across to the Titans’ stadium. Our search for lunch found us at the good ol’ reliable Hard Rock Cafe (basically next door to Famous). After stuffing my face with some pretty tasty pulled pork sammich, we walked it off to check in on some of the nearby touristy venues, like John Rich’s Redneck Riviera, Luke Bryan’s Luke’s 32 Bridge, Kid Rock’s Big Ass Honky Tonk, and Dierks Bentley’s Whiskey Row. The weather being what it was (COLD!) on that Thursday, the “crowds” were well thinned out.

The clock ran out on us and WHAMMO, we got slobber-knockered with the “bomb cyclone”. Woke up to below zero temps, EVERYTHING was frozen up. I learned from some fellow RVers some years ago that to keep the on-board hoses/pipes/etc. from freezing up in freezing temps, leave the wet bay interior light on over night. I did that, rolled up my water hose and used towels to blanket the whole reel. Alas, that no work in sub-zero temps. Solid as a rock. It is also fun when the electric/gas AC/heat pump units don’t operate on electric when temps are too extreme. So it was fire up the gas and let ‘er rip (glad I had a full LP tank). I broke out my little Big Heat electric 1500 watt space heater and set it up in my wet bay to thaw things out. It’s nice that I could plug it into the 20A power post outlet and not risk blowing out any of the MH plugs. It only took about 8 hours for water to be restored to the bus. So, here we are, waiting for Santa, icicles hanging off our eyebrows, with forecast temperatures “soaring” up into the 30-40’s on Monday, at which time we will be heading warp factor 8 south in search of a tiny bit more temperate weather.

9/27/2017 The Lower 48 Completed!

It took 5 years of full-timing, but we can finally say our wheels traveled through and came to a stop for at least one night’s stay in all of the lower 48 states of the union! And in all but 3 states we actually stayed in at least 1 RV campground/park. Kansas, Nebraska, and West Virginia were our park-less stops, but stops nonetheless with the help of some of the many options available for free, overnight stays. In these 5 years we have learned of several no-cost options for overnight stays during our travels, including but not limited to Walmart, Cracker Barrel, truck stops, some rest stops, Cabelas, Bass Pro, public lands such as BLM and National Forest lands, and occasional open field/private property that allows overnighters. Now, in that time and during these travels, we have seen a lot of beautiful sights nationwide, however we have only scratched the surface and there remains still much more to experience. How much more, on our part, remains to be seen, since we are starting to get the “settle down itch”. What that means – total “get off the road” to maybe becoming part-timers to remaining status quo, we just haven’t sorted the cards we have been dealt yet. But for now I’ll get back to current events.

Finished in Maine, it was time to head back west for some kids and grandkids time. It was not without some minor detours. When Jeanne’s sister Denise left us we told her we were gonna swing by on our way west to check on her in Branson, MO, (she recently lost her husband, Don.) So instead of a northern crossing we headed south. We did an overnighter at the Sturbridge, MA Walmart, then to an overnighter at a place called Aspen Family Campground in Candor, NY. Holy-Total-Pit Batman! This place was off a skinny road, with a skinny, back angled driveway which I BARELY made with the toad, then terrible rutted gravel uphill driveway. We were tired and did not feel like driving more, so we buckled and stayed here. The grass field we were put in was accessed through a tunnel of trees, then was not even close to level, and the sites were not delineated so you park any which way you like near the W/E post. The grass/mud was moist enough that when I tried to use my jacks, they just sunk into the grass/mud. So it was an unlevel, unrestful night’s sleep for us, never to return here again.

Next stop was the Luray KOA in Virginia. While here we took a drive along the Skyline Dr. in Shenandoah National Park and used this stop to take care of some business, car insurance business that is. Texas is a terrible state to have to insure your vehicles through if you are a full time RVer with the Escapees RV Club mailing address in Livingston. Our Jeep insurer, Nationwide, just notified us that the Jeep was going up $1,000 more this year, no tickets, accidents, nothing. After clearing the smoke out of our motorhome from what billowed out of my ears, Jeanne set off on yet ANOTHER insurance search. We ended up at Hartford through AARP (sometimes it’s nice to be an old fart) and got a $100 discount by just taking an online AARP Driver’s Safety course. The hunt continues for a break in our motorhome insurance, currently costing us $4,000 per year (just let that one soak in for a second, don’t say a word!)

Another Walmart overnighter in Hurricane, West Virginia, then it was on to Frankfort, KY and the Elkhorn Campground. While there Jeanne and I were able to finish out the Kentucky Brewgrass Trail (craft breweries in the area) and earned our official Brewgrass Trail T-shirts (sorry, no pic, they had to mail them to us and we haven’t gotten our mail yet.) We also made a visit to the Buffalo Trace Distillery this time around. It is not included in the official Kentucky Bourbon Trail or the Craft Distillery Trail, but it is on the trail. The distillery gives free tours and tastings and is quite picturesque. Also while here we started seeing these small painted rocks hidden around the park, we found 3. It seems there is a Facebook group called RVers Rock! who are the responsible culprits. The tops of the rocks are painted with anything the artist desires, then the backs have instructions printed to keep or rehide the rock, post pictures on the group’s FB feed, and frequently have the location/park of origin or state also included. This caught Jeanne’s curiosity/interest, so it looks like we will become artists now. Our 3 found rocks will also find new homes somewhere along our westward trail to California. You never know where you may find one, they can be anywhere. We will be sticking with hiding them in or around RV parks.

Gotta love the RV lifestyle. For the couple of weeks prior to our Elkhorn stop we have been having more issues with our water heater. Our water only heated to tepid at best. We were putting off looking for a service center until I just blew a gasket (metaphorically speaking). I called Precision Temp and one of their people in the know helped me troubleshoot the issue, discovering the propane regulator was bad. Gasket #2 just went (another one of them there  metaphors) since we had just replaced the piece of $h!t regulator last January. It seems somebody imported a buttload of bad regulators, probably from our friend China, this according to the Precision Temp guys. Anyways, on moving day our first stop was at Bluegrass RV in Lexington to get another regulator. The saving grace for the day was that on our way in for service we got treated to an nice sunrise, Kentucky style.

On the road with HOT water (!!!!Yippee!!!!), another Walmart, and into Branson, MO we rode. Denise hooked us up with a site at her camping club, Treasure Lake RV Resort, in downtown Branson. We had a nice stay visiting with Denise, Cedric, Savonna, Robert, Cooper, Brody, and Khloey (I probably mangled the spelling, sorry kid!). And we had HOT water the whole time!

Oh the joys of the RV lifestyle, volume 2. We have been having nothing but problems with our satellite reception since we switched DISH receivers to the Wally version up in Maine. Trying to figure out the cable and over-the-air reception has also been a disaster for quite some time. With (4) massive TV’s scattered throughout the motorhome, they never acquire the same channels from one TV to the other at any given stop. And to make matters worse, the jumble of wiring jammed into the small cabinet area is a nightmare trying to decipher. To add insult to injury, Woodrow Wilson (our K9 travel companion) has had one too many accidents on our small piece of carpet in the rig. It was becoming stained from all the shampooing Jeanne has had to do to clean up Woody’s indiscretions. So since we was in Missouri, another detour seemed in order, back to the east to our very favorite and happiest place on Earth…Red Bay, Alabama! (Insert mega-sarcasm here!) Home of Tiffin Motorhomes and the world famous Tiffin Service Center. 

And the joys of the RV lifestyle are the gifts that keep on giving. So we are southbound out of Branson, heading for I-40 East. No sooner do we get out of town when my yellow check engine light starts going on and off, with the accompanying “ding, ding, ding” and the red “brake air” warning light flashing, the same time my gauges for the two air tanks go to zero. This goes on, intermittently, for about the next hour and a half. I have had issues with my warning lights and gauges since I got the motorhome 3 years ago. We have been to several Freightliner/Cummins shops, every time it occurs. It has gone unresolved from day one, but the audible alarms that go off drive me crazy. So this new occurrence was not surprising, but 90 minutes is a long time to worry if the bus would shut down at any time. The drivability during these episodes has never been affected. Add this problem to my Tiffin list, since Bay Diesel is just down the street.

We stayed at one of the off-campus campgrounds this time around (the service center was jam packed full). We got hooked up with Daniel Humphries, one of the “after-hours” techs who work on Tiffin products, to get new carpet (his specialty). While waiting we tried yet again to obtain full satellite reception. Our big gripe was we have never received high definition channels from the hi-def satellite, #129, since we switched to Wally. Still no hi-def, I did my usual call to DISH to try to resolve it. Gasket #3 went after another hour-long phone debate with the DISH techs and troubleshooting attempt. I hung up on DISH and we put a call into another after-hours tech for Tiffin products, Nick Brewer who specializes in the satellite/TV/electronics stuff. Nick took all of 1 minute and had me go into diagnostics, click one stinking button, and BOOM! I got satellite #129 and all the hi-def I could want. I guess the DISH techs were playing hooky the day they taught that in tech school.

While waiting/dealing with the cable/over-the-air issues, as well as a try to get in at Bay Diesel, we decided to poke our heads in and say howdy to Marion who is the tech in Bay #2, he has done work for us in the past. We also stopped in at the Tiffin parts store for a couple of things and Jeanne blurts out “Dave & Diane!” In the flesh, we see Dave and Diane (Dave writes his blog “Dave & Diane throwing caution to the wind”). Theirs was one of the first full timer blogs Jeanne started following way back in the beginning. And in the small world of RV traveling, we have run into them 3 times now; at the SKP park Jojoba Hills, CA, in the desert boondocking in Quartzsite, AZ, and now at the “real” happiest place on Earth in Red Bay. We chatted briefly and vowed to get together to swap stories, but regretfully we were not there long enough to make it happen. 

Well, we got the carpet and hi-def issues resolved during this run to Red Bay. The diesel shop could not get us in for the dash light issue and Daniel tightened up some connections but it did not resolve the cable/air issues for TV. So it was back to the road, westward ho again. We had been watching weather and noticed the North and Northwest were starting to take on snow. That made the decision on routes easy, I-40 it was. A plus with this decision was there are numerous Freightliner shops along I-40 and I was intent on getting my dash light issue fixed once and for all. I settled on the Premier Truck Group Freightliner Service Center in Amarillo, TX. Last December I had been to the same company at their Dallas, TX shop for the same issue. The overall experience, especially this current one, has eroded any faith or trust in Freightliner as a company. Besides having to waste 3 full days, getting NO resolution, and having to pay out of my pocket for the issue which should have been fully covered under the original warranty, I got to listen to numerous truckers bad-mouth and complain about Freightliner’s terrible customer service practices. I was so full of piss and vinegar that I wrote a lengthy letter to Freightliner, with a copy to Bob Tiffin. 

Anger set aside, breathing deeply, chanting in a meditative state, we continue our trek westbound, a couple of days out of California. And soon, well, take a look for yourself…

4/22/2017 Ready For Detox and Rehab…

With the Kentucky Horse Park in our rearview mirror, we headed into the Cincinnati area to finish off our Kentucky Bourbon Trail Craft Tour. We found a home at a small RV campground run by the Family Motor Coach Association called, appropriately enough, FMCA Campground. Go figger. It is a small campground with 15 FHU 50A sites and an additional 8 sites that are 30A electric only. This is an FMCA members only park and is very well maintained. Long, level, concrete back-in sites well spaced with lots of green grass between, the first two nights are free and only $20 per night for up to 5 additional nights. Woody (our K9 companion) liked the county park/lake that was adjacent to the campground with a mile and a half walking path circumnavigating the lake.

We hit the last 3 distilleries on the Craft Tour; Boone County Distillery, New Riff Distillery, and the Old Pogue Distillery. Yippee Kai-yay! Now we can settle down and detox/rehab! I have to say, after 23 distilleries, from the big boys to the smallest of mom-and-pop’s, my favorites tended to be the craft distillers. Of the Big 10, I liked the Woodford Reserve Double Barrel bourbon. Of the craft kids, I had a couple of favorites. From MB Roland Distillery, they produce a Dark Fired bourbon that is made with smoked corn in the mashbill, very smoky flavor. They also produce a moonshine called St. Elmo’s Fire that is very tasty. That is a cinnamon flavor with added cayenne pepper and it would light your cigar! Bluegrass Distillery produces a very good bourbon/rye mix. Hartfield & Co. make a white whiskey that is highly sippable. And Old Pogue produces a 100% Rye whiskey that is worth a taste.

Rain nailed us a couple of days here but we had enough clear days to check out downtown Cincinnati. We let Woody take us on a walkabout across the John A. Roebling Bridge, built in 1867, to the areas of the Reds and Bengals stadiums. And I took the opportunity to give the bus and Jeep baths before we headed out from Cincinnati.

We debated whether to head over to the ocean and hang out at Virginia Beach in a little warmer weather, but settled on heading north and maybe trying to visit Michigan. Next stop ended at Maumee State Park in Oregon, OH (the Toledo area). We stayed for 2 days and walked the trails of the park over to the beach areas of Lake Erie. Just to remind y’all, we rarely operate on reservation schedules, don’t care to be “pinned down” to schedules. So one day was pretty much spent researching stops in Michigan as we worked our way up the west coast toward Mackinac Island. We also wanted to throw in a visit to Gerald Ford’s Presidential Museum in Grand Rapids.

From the state park we drove into Marshall, MI and found Camp Turkeyville campground. This was a campground associated with Cornewell’s Turkeyville, a family run turkey farm that sports a restaurant for dinner-theater events, large gift shop, petting zoo for the kids, and various family activities geared toward the kids.  From here we did some drive/scouting into the towns of Marshall, Lansing, and Battle Creek. And, of course, a drive into Grand Rapids got us to Ford’s Presidential Museum. Another well done museum, the surprising information to me was that Ford was offered a spot on the offensive line as center for the Green Bay Packers football team. It was back in 1935, and he was offered a whopping $110 per game! Too bad we can’t roll back today’s players salaries to those days, maybe us poor folk could afford a game ticket or two…

So, north was where we were headed. Murphy’s Legislation reared it’s ugly head, again. As we tried to find destinations, we quickly realized we were in Michigan a bit too early in the year. It appears most RV establishments in this part of the world don’t open for business until May, I guess it gets a little cold here and they may encounter a touch of snowfall now and then. Not willing to wait it out, change of plans #7,936. We decided to head over toward Pennsylvania.

Cleveland just happened to be in our way enroute to PA, and that city just happens to be home of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. We found a hole in the wall 55+ trailer park that had a few RV spaces for transients like us passing through, Maywood Community in Chesterland just outside of Cleveland. The sites need work, but are level concrete with FHU’s and the $20/night fee worked for us, wanting a couple of days stopover while we visit Cleveland. We visited upon the Rock HOF and let Woody lead us around the downtown area including the Reds baseball stadium and the Cav’s basketball arena. We also got a cool lightning/thunder show while we were here at Maywood Community.

Jacks up, eastbound and down we are. Next stop, the great state of Pennsylvania. Until next post…

4/12/2017 Horses, Bourbon, & Brews

In the Lexington area, we found the Kentucky Horse Park for a week’s stay. That is a large park that is everything equine, with an RV campground attached to it. They have tours for things like a Parade of Breeds, you can watch grooming and other chores related to horses, and Man o’ War is buried in a memorial garden there. We did not take any of the tours, not being real horse aficionados. I guess Man o’ War was kind of a big celebrity in his day, won lots of races and sired lots of champions. The RV campground was OK as far as campgrounds go, spacious enough, but getting level was a chore on the paved site. It was disappointing the sites were W/E only (for $30 a night, sewer would be nice), but at least they had 2 dump sites in the park. There was a nice playground area for the kiddies, pool area (although not in use right now), toilets/showers, and a bike trail leading out of the park.

We hit up some more of the Bourbon Trail distilleries while here in Lexington and stumbled upon an additional “trail” that was more or less localized around Lexington…the Kentucky Brewgrass Trail. That would consist of 11 fairly local microbrewers of all things beer. OK, challenge on! Well, at this stop we did complete the Kentucky Bourbon Trail (the 10 “big” corporate-type distilleries like Beam and Wild Turkey). We closed in on completing the Craft Tour. But we hit a wall with the dang microbreweries. Their days and hours were all over the map. We goofed at first and assumed businesses were generally open when we drove 40 miles out of Lexington to get to the breweries in Danville & Harrodsburg only to find them closed. And the final straw was after checking days and hours to make sure they were open, then driving out again to Lemons Mill Brewing in Harrodsburg only to find them closed again. I called their phone number and spoke to a person who said they would not open that day due to lack of patrons lately and there were some sports events on TV. Arrrrggghhhhh!!!!!!

During one of our drives to Harrodsburg, we did encounter Beaumont St., a historical area of mini-antebellum style mansions. We let Woody lead us on a walkabout down the street and to the Beaumont Inn.

This area of Kentucky is hugely into horses and horse farms. Claiborne Farms is just one of the local outfits and they offer tours to us mere mortals, and part of the intrigue is they offer you the opportunity to wrap your arms around $90,000,000 worth of horse (that’s seven zeros, folks!). We could not pass that one up. The ranch consists of some 3,000 acres, 50 barns, and 35 houses. Obviously, the tour did not cover the whole schmear, but basically the business end of the thoroughbred breeding enterprise- – – the breeding shed, the stud barns, and face to face with some of the current studs, including top dog War Front, currently valued at about $90,000,000 and who fetches a stud fee of $250,000. Just a few of Claiborne’s historical accomplishments:

*raised 63 champions and 17 Horses of the Year

*stallions and offspring have 22 Kentucky Derby wins, 19 Preakness wins, 22 Belmont wins, 29 Breeder’s Cup wins

*6 of 12 Triple Crown winners have been sired by Claiborne stallions.

OK, enough about horses. Well, almost enough. The Keeneland Racetrack happens to be here in Lexington and son-of-a-gun-show-me-some-fun we just happened to be here during their opening weekend, so a day at the horse races seemed in order. $5 admission says you can’t argue with that! Now this was interesting. I don’t know if opening weekend is different from other weekends. The place was jam-PACKED! The track itself was ankle-to-elbow, but there were probably twice as many folks outside the track area showing no interest in going inside to watch races. The crowd was majority college kids, and they get all dressed up like going to a prom. It appeared to me they were all deeply involved in study groups for their class “Power Drinking 101”! I felt like a pinball walking around inside the track, drunks bouncing off my shoulders constantly, some nearly falling down. But we managed to survive the crowd and Jeanne got to donate a little cash to the local horse economy. I think her last horse betted on had 81:1 odds. Come to think of it, as of the time I am writing this, that very horse is still rounding the first turn…

Our “last hurrah” at this park was our bike ride along the Legacy Trail. It was about a 20 mile round trip ride into downtown Lexington along Cane Creek. If this trail was indicative of the way Kentucky does all their hike/bike trails, they definitely got it going on. At all the trailheads along our trail, they installed a “Fix It” post. These included manual bicycle pumps and a slew of hand tools cabled together for all manner of bicycle repair. Anyway, it was a nice moderate ride.

3/31/2017 “Barreling” On Toward the Kentucky Bourbon Trail (no pun intended…well, OK, so it WAS intended!)

We chose to pop on over to Atlanta so we could visit Jimmy Carter’s Presidential Library. We stayed at the Stone Mountain Park again for a quick 2 day stay. Since our last stop there, they have done quite a few improvements such as adding yurts and park model trailers for rent, erected a large, very nice playground area for the kids, and across the lake a huge Marriott’s hotel sprung up. 

The Carter Presidential Library (it is actually called a “Center”, not a library) was OK. I was disappointed not more attention was devoted to the Iran Hostage Crisis. Even the Bush libraries had extensive displays regarding their wars, whether you consider them justified or not. I think the hostage crisis overshadowed the Panama Canal Treaty and even the Peace Treaty between Israel and Egypt. It should play a more prominent part in Carter’s Library. Just my two cents…

We had a little bit of spare time so we wanted to do the walk up Stone Mountain. The mountain does not look very daunting, but it is actually a good leg workout, continuous incline with numerous rocks/steps thrown in for good measure. But the view at the top was very nice.

So with another Presidential Library notch in our belts, onward and upward. Weather looked to be getting a bit more mellow, so we decided to start our northward trek. Chattanooga, Tennessee was our next chosen stop. We found a Camping World campground on the south side of town which was actually an OK stop; full hookups, level site, $17 per night, and close to town. We used this opportunity to do a Costco run and load up.

A short trip into downtown found us at the Walnut Street Bridge which is a foot bridge across the Tennessee River. We walked around the area a bit and found a sidewalk that was anything but straight. Not much had changed in the area since we were here last. We have been in the area before and already checked out Rock City and Point Park on Lookout Mountain (Civil War site). This time we were going to visit Ruby Falls, an underground waterfall, but seeing it was a short excursion, we opted instead for a 9.6 mile hike on the Mullen’s Cove Loop Trail in the Prentice Cooper State Forest. That was one killer hike! My hams and quads are still singing…

From Tennessee it was up into Kentucky for our next adventure, at the Mammoth Cave National Park. We stayed 4 days at the park campground, right next to the visitor’s center. The park offers several different cave tours and we started out with the Historic Entrance self tour. This was a short walk/tour and pretty uneventful as far as caves go, especially if you’ve ever been anywhere like the Oregon Caves or Carlsbad Caverns. We also took the short hike down the River Styx Spring Trail to see the spring.

While at the campground, we found the Mammoth Cave Railroad Bike & Hike Trail. The bikes got a little work in (NO! My hams and quads got all the work! Ouch!) on the 16 mile ride which included a couple of healthy (read: steep) inclines.

After all that physical exertion, I was ready for some sedentary living and beginning the Kentucky Bourbon Trail was just the ticket. From our base at Mammoth Cave, we were able to start both trails. There is the Kentucky Bourbon Trail that consists of 10 distilleries (the ones I call “corporate”, large conglomerates like Jim Beam and Maker’s Mark), and the Kentucky Bourbon Trail Craft Tour that consists of 13 small distilleries (the mom-and-pop family outfits). All 23 are scattered pretty much around the Bowling Green-Louisville-Lexington triangle. Our start got us visiting 5 of the 23 from our home at Mammoth Cave.

We concluded our stay with one more cave tour, the Domes and Dripstones Tour. The name of the tour is more spectacular than the sights along this tour. There are a few cave features at the end of the 2 hour tour, but, if you have seen anything like Carlsbad Caverns, you will be disappointed here.

Time to move along, we relocated to Bardstown with a 4 day stay at the White Acre Campground. We started here with a little walkabout town, steeped in Civil War lore and architecture.

From this stop we were able to snag another round of Kentucky Bourbon Trail stops. Trying to hit up all 23 distilleries is certainly giving us some exposure to back roads and some beautiful scenery. Some of the horse farms we passed were spectacular, especially when your looking at a huge mansion, then realize it is just the horse barn! We should live as well as some of these horses…

After 4 days and a couple of very large thunder/lightening spectacles, we motored a bit north to the Louisville area. We found the Add-More Campground actually in Clarksville, Indiana for a short 2 day stop to finish up this area’s Bourbon Trail participants. Besides the distilleries here, Jeanne found an area of downtown called 4th Street Live! which we took a stroll through. It was daytime as we did, but it looked more to be a happening place for the nightlife. The area is similar to Fremont St. in Vegas, sans the freakazoids, with stage area for bands and all the food and liquor you could imagine.

There was also a foot bridge called the “Big Four Bridge” that crossed the Ohio River and gave good views of downtown. That bridge was a railroad bridge built in the 1880’s-1890’s and in 1929 they built a new bridge inside the old frame. 42 workers died while building the bridge, so now it is considered a monument to those who died.

Well, it’s moving time again. Headed east now, gotta finish the Bourbon Trails with the Lexington area stops. Lookout, Lexington, here we come!
